If you want to make swing changes, and work on drills, always use a 7 or 8 iron. If you have a very old driver and want to put a little muney into something, then go to a second hand "trade up" golf shop, and look for something under $100. You can get my favorite driver, the Titelist 975D for about $60 8^)
