hi snake, i played in a pro am last year and was surprised how short some of their backswings were, maybe watching lots of videos or getting to a tournament may help you also.

i watched a video of garcia and he never got the club pointing at the target line at top of swing, (big shock). i know when i forshorten my backswing to a little past parelell to the earth i play better, i also agree that on a full shot this is hard to do as we associate longer swings with more power.
