I have seen this type of shot used to great effect by my father-in-law, where the ball scampers up on the green.

I've tried it and it just isn't me. I prefer a 3/4 wedge (pitch/gap/sand) for those 100 yards and in shots and I never try to hit a wedge with a full swing. Mainly as my bad shot with a full swing wedge is a nasty thin that travels about twice as far as it should (there are few things more depressing than a 200 yard wedge shot that sails over the green!).

The only time I use this shot is when it's very windy, for obvious reasons.
