Spot on Aftford!
A golf swing bottoms out around the left armpit, longer
clubs should have the ball placed around this position so the loft of the club sweeps the ball off the ground, you should not try to scoop the ball into the air. Also a full shoulder turn is necessary with a low swing plane.
Shorter
clubs require the clubface to pinch the ball into the ground by hitting into the back of the ball, this will get the ball airborne. It requires the ball being more central in the stance encouraging a downward contact.
