I am 6' 1" myself but I cut my putter down to 30.25" . The following website can explain why most putters off the shelf are too long.

Basically you want your arms to hang down comfortably and your eyes over the ball. If you are a growing young man you can always add to the length of a putter later on. A little elbow bend is o.k. but as little as possible is best. Look at Phil Mickelson and you will see that his forward arm hangs almost straight down and his putter is very, very short.
