I have just read most of Hank Haney's book, "The only golf lesson you will ever need". I found his thoughts on the swing plane different from what I have heard before.

My concept of being on plane in the swing related to the three quarter position (viewed down the line), with the club shaft angle pointing somewhere between the toes and the ball. I think many instructors also go by this as a guidance of being on plane.

In Haney's book he says this is incorrect, the plane at this point in the swing should be parrallel to the plane of the shaft at address, and in his picture the angle of the shaft points slightly outside the ball.
