I used to have the same problem...... the reason i hit my driver so well is because the ball was elevated so i could make good contact without a good release of a decending blow. but with the iron on the ground you have to hit it with a decending blow and compress the ball in order to get better distance..... for me anyways. i think for a driver you don't have to be that good to hit it 250+ and strait because it is elevated off the ground and easier to hit(just swing the club at it), but
irons you need to have a good swing and a decending blow to make good contact, that gives you good distances a better feel god hight and nice backspin. HTH
