This distance is fine for the irons, but IMO, it should be a bit more for the driver. Make a fist with the left hand and extend the thumb straight out (like a "thumbs-up" sign or like a hitchhiker would do) This fist with the extended thumb should barely fit between the butt of the shaft and the left thigh.
