I have made dramatic improvements this year - but not on the scorecard, which is really frustrating.
I have achieved every single individual challenge I have set for my game
- hit under 36 putts more than once. I was averaging 34 putts for a few weeks and actually hit 32 putts on two occasions. Last year I had a few rounds of 43 putts - so goal well achieved
- Hit the Driver consistently. I was very happy to achieve this as it was a club I didn't have in my bag a year ago as I just couldn't hit it, whereas now I can rely upon it for a good 230/240 of carry.
- Start getting 3 or 4 up and downs in a round, which I've done. I've even got a handful of up and downs from bunkers...
- Start hitting 6/18 (33%) of GIR. Last year I'd be lucky to get 1 GIR in a round. The last round I played I had 8/18 GIR (44%)
- play a round without loosing a ball - which I have done on a few occasions
However, last year my best score was 93 - with no GIRs, probably over 36 putts, only 1 or 2 "lucky" up and downs etc, etc... So I thought if i was capable of all of the above it would be easy to break 90.... But no, I've hit a few 91's even hit 90 once, I rarely ever fail to break 100 - so I'm more consistent than I was that way. Last year I was capable of 110 or 114 if things got bad, whereas that isn't happening now.
Basically I'm not putting everything together.
My last round was typical of that, even though I hit 8 GIRs, I somehow managed to hit 41 putts - and lost 2 balls OOB and ended up with a score of 96. The 2 OOBs and 5 extra putts (above 36) give me 9 extra shots that I should be avoiding! But the day I hit 32 putts I will have a nightmare with my
irons and hit no GIRs but putt great and drag out a 94.
I know it's all in my head at this stage.... Hopefully I'll be able to get the monkey off my back soon!
