I tried this lat night and was plesantly surprised to watch the toe ball roll further than the heel ball.

I think this is the "natural" thing to happen when you swing a flat object around a fixed point.
You have to manipulate your hands/body to keep it square all the time, the open-square-closed will happen all by itself if you let it.
