That $1200 looked high even into a regional airport so I checked cheapflights.com Cheap flights to Birmingham, UK from New York, NY (JFK)
Its showing $500 - $600 excl. taxes for a round trip; OK no dates showing for August on this page but I think you could save some money shopping around.
