The pro (I think this was LPGA) hit into a vendors booth. Her relief was more than one clublength but less than two, no nearer the hole.
IOW, she had to drop AT LEAST one club away from the building, but no more than two.
Originally she measured with her driver. She had no look. Then she used her SW, and had a line.
So, while it's an etiquette thing that says use the club for the next shot, it's simply advised. There's no penalty for measuring one and using another.
