The slope rating is a system used in the USA (not sure if it's used anywhere else) that classifies a course by its scale of difficulty, the slope rating is used in a formula when calculating handicaps (Score - Course Rating) x 113 / Slope Rating) it can then be used to adjust a handicap depending on the actual course being played and its rating. A rating of 113 is the slope for a course of average difficulty.
