First, for approach shots the best idea is to aim for the fattest part of the green, regardless of where the pin is.

Second, you can either buy clubs 'off the rack', or you can get them fitted.

I'll suggest getting fitted to start. Off the rack clubs for a 5'6" person will most likely be too long. And yes, fitted clubs will help your game.
