My son was 6 when I started him. The most important thing is to keep it fun for your child. Don't make him practice if he doesn't to, he has to enjoy the game if he is going to have any chance to excel at it. Be positive with your comments - don't critisize.

As for teaching your son, take him for a lesson with your local teaching professional. One lesson will give him the basics he needs to start with.

As for grip, I would suggest the interlock grip - it keeps his hands together and will build on how the hands need to work together. The interlock works well for small handed people, so it's perfect for small children.
