Rules were meant to be broken

I have a rules question, if you couldn't tell already. I know that it is illegal to improve your line by fixing a divot off the green. But can you fix it after you hit, like a normal divot. What happened was I hit a 5 iron into a par three, and it dropped from the heavens and left a hole the size of a crater off the green. I putted over it in order to not break the rule, but this was a tournament and a teammate of mine was playing behind me. I don't know if it was mine but he said he did have to putt over someones divot off the green. So I wanted to know if after finishing the hole I can fix it.

Thanks all
Big mike
