COG's have been getting progressively lower, so lofts have been getting progressively weaker to keep ball flights 'normal'.

So, today's 3i or 4i is the same loft as an old school 2i.

This is what's facilitated the need for a gap wedge. You couldn't let the SW creep, otherwise we'd never clear some bunker lips... hence the need for the GW.
