It is true that at the range you can become engrained with one club, however sometimes you need to hit the same club over and over when making a swing change, on the wall at a driving range in South Africa is a 7 iron with the face worn off, it belongs to Nick Price when he changed his swing over several months.

You new found friend is obviously a good player and practices the one chance technic, on the course you have one chance to hit your target, so does your card trick at the range, a very good idea and practice method.
