I am glad to hear your club hasnt broken as I have heard they are not very reliable
I'd get what length you need and make it clear to the guy your having do this that you'll be back as soon as one comes loose...if it comes loose or breaks. It can and will work, the guy will let you know if 3 inches is too much...just depends on if you're getting a good job or not. Will it effect the flex?

I had a buddy with +1" and a couple clubs had separated or maybe even broke in the grip. I can see why though, I witnessed one of his break (more of a separation in the grip) when he took a 2 foot divot.
