The point would be the amount of backspin on the ball. Taking a divot will stop a ball quicker on the greens.

If you want to simulate grass wetsand is a good substitute. You will also be able to see the shape of the divots in the wet sand. The beach sounds like a good place to work on your swing mechanics and the practice range for hitting.
