Howdy Sean,
Best quit while your ahead and never think about this stupid game. But, it sure is fun and you may find yourself thinking about nothing but golf. You've found a great site with some very helpful members. Get with an instructor if possible and read Ben Hogan's 5 Lessons (the first chapter on the grip is worth it if nothing else). I played my first round with some friends that play often and picked up on ettiquite and rules from them so I didn't feel completely lost out there.
As far as your set of
clubs go, the local course can help you find/probably have a used whole set to start out with. I'm probably going against most others, but do not overlook getting them on ebay. I knew what I wanted and found my current set of
Cleveland irons for 120 bucks. My friend plays with a set of
Callaway X18 clones made by Turbo Power and they hit very well and quite forgiving for this high handicapper. There are quite a few sellers of clones on there so he emailed a few of them and ended up calling one of them to discuss what the guy recommended as far as custom fitting...he couldn't be happier with the $150 or so he spent on them. You would still have to come up with a bag, putter and woods though, so again, check the local course and try to find a used set that way.
