Hitting out the heel

Whilst hitting at the driving range I noticed that the balls were leaving marks on the clubface which were consistently close to the heel of my irons. Sometimes this is very drastic and the ball actually hits the hosel with disastrous consequences.

To compensate for this I tried addressing the ball off the toe which resulted in some nice strikes out the centre of the clubface. Whether I hit them out the heel or the centre they are flying pretty straight so I'm puzzled as to why I seem to be throwing the club out a couple of inches or so on the downswing.

As I'd rather not have to make this compensation and address the ball normally any comments or advice would be most welcome.

Thanks

P.S My brother has the opposite problem of hitting off the toe!
