When you use a fairway wood off the deck, you must compensate for the height of the tee. The swing plane will also change slightly off the deck being steeper to get the ball in the air quicker.

I play the 3 wood slightly back of the forward heel from a tee and about 2 balls back off the deck. Other woods 4-11 would compensate more 1/2" per club on average.

To hit an exceptional fairway wood don't think of hitting at the ball, hit through the ball. The last round I had a 575 yard par 5 I hit a decent driver, but hit a low boring 3 wood to 30 yards. Little chip and putt for a birdie. Not a tricked up hole, level ground at sea level. A good 3 wood will shorten the distance on hole quick!
