Hand turnover during Through Swing

I do not hit balls long. Not even decent distances. One of my friends did suggest that I am not turning my right hand over my left (I am right handed player) during the through Swing process and this is killing the speed. I did try " turning over" the hand but this results in shots going straight left. Let me add that the ball contact is more consistent and feels better; I am also able to hit longer shots with seemingly less effort but the flight direction makes me tentative and I am not so sure what I am doing is right. I do see the pros do it naturally when I closely observe their swing actions but at what point should I turn the hand over. Or is there a fundamental error in my understanding of the whole issue.
Help please
