Short club -- mid club

Okay, this might be a stupid question. Is the 7I considered a short or mid club. Framed another way, when practicing striking angles is the 7I the same as 9 -8 and pw or is the more shallow mid iron angle?

In my humble opinion the 7 iron is a mid iron and should be used the same as the 8,9 and wedges with respect to SK1. I would change the nail's angle at the 5 iron.

Just got back from the range, hit soooo much better today. Really getting the hang of nail angle. Hit some really crisp shots. Hitting a slight fade.

So you think I should stay with steep angle until 5I? I'll give it a go.

I am only working with pw-7I. I am going to work the heck out of these clubs before I move down.

3,4,5 long; 6,7,8 mid; 9,P,A(G) short.

This pertains to a modern set. Pre 1995 I'd say 3,4 long, 567 mid and 89P short.

Put another way, your 38" club is your last long iron.

Right on Ben. With 3 skills there are three nail angles used in part of the imagery for striking the ball, one is up to a 6 iron, another 5 iron upwards (including fairway woods and hybrids) and finally one for the driver and 3 wood.

Would these angles change for someone who's using a compressed range or single length set?

Only three angles of attack. I am not aware of any golf learning system making that level of distinction.

So do I also keep ball placement the same all the way through 6I or do I simply keep nail angle the same but move the ball forward as needed?

It's an illusion of movement, Joe. Find as many 'stock shot' photos of the pros, and watch to see how far the ball is from their LEAD heel (left heel for a RH golfer) - you'll find it really doesn't move from a spot 2-3 inches behind that heel. It's the trailing foot moving closer and farther that changes where the ball appears to be playing in the stance.

So much to learn.

The 3Skills book explains the 3 nail angles to use for differing clubs, it also explains how you should swing from the inside and strike the ball at the widest point of the arc. There is then a section that explains how you should use imagery to hit the ball out right by different amounts with each club. SK3 then explains how you should turn the clubface from open to square through impact to draw the ball back into the middle. When using SK2 your shots will go right but that is what is expected.

Ball placement IMO should be as Lowpost suggests, a few inches inside your lead heal for all clubs, you then widen your stance as the club gets longer.
