Re: i used the 3 skills and nailed it!

i cant believe its only a week since the GTO event and the 3skills presentation by kevin.
i have put some reasonable time in practising this week and its paid off handsomely today
played solo off the yellows after the last comp 3 ball had gone out even there slowcoach military golf couldnt put me off.
it went 3,5,6,4,5,4,4,6,4,5,5,2,5,3,5,6,6,4 = 82 gross 60 nett
im not saying every shot was "nailed" perfectly but using the 3skills has made a massive improvement to my ball striking.
the "nail it" concept is the only instruction i will be using from now on, with time my game can only get better and better!

happy days

I'm in the states too. I had AJ's DVD and couldn't get the timing right. Please post a review after you receive the book. I'm not looking for a free copy, only want to know if it differs from AJ dramatically. Interestingly the picture of a nail through a golf ball is also one of his visuals.

Re: i used the 3 skills and nailed it!

Hope you handed in that card to your handicap secretary Slats, cant be having you shooting 82 off a 22 handicap or you might find yourself getting carrots sent through the post for your horse. LOL
Nice one keep up the good work next GTO golf day you will be in single figures then
I have another clear sunny day in the mid 20's here slight breeze, I bet my house as soon as I am able to swing a club the rain returns.

I didn't purchase the AJ materials, but a few years back there was a lot of discussion on here about his approach, and some excerpts were posted, as I recall. So I'm not in a position to give a detailed comparison. But as you say, the nail through the golf ball is/was an AJ trademark, and I recall that he places great emphasis on closing/rotating the club face through the impact zone.

Like slats, my approach has always been to try to keep the clubface square as long as possible, on the (reasonable?) assumption that if I do this I increase the odds that it'll be square at impact. In addition, the actual time of impact is far too fast for me to do any conscious manipulation of the club face. As I recall, AJ makes much of our ability to do these things unconsciously, but since I only heard some excerpts, I can't say much more than that.

The "Simple Swing" system, which I recently purchased and worked with for a while, also teaches rotation of the wrists through impact, and had a drill for this. I spent a lot of time on this drill but I couldn't get the timing right, so I was pushing or pulling the ball all over the place. Indeed, I find that as soon as I start thinking about doing things with my wrists in the golf swing, it breaks down pretty fast.

It's not that I don't believe that this opening/closing approach can work. If I didn't believe it I wouldn't have ordered the 3 skills book. I'm hoping the book provides a fresh approach that I can work with.

As for the hitting down/nailing the ball aspect... To me this simply means that the club contacts the ball just before the bottom of the swing arc (for irons), therefore at the beginning point of the divot or grass scratch zone. This is something I've known as long as I've been playing golf. The question is: What's the best way to accomplish this?

In my own case, the start point of my typical divot is pretty far back--not too far ahead of my right foot. This is presumably because my weight tends to get stuck back on my right foot and/or I leave my hips behind. So, to "nail" the ball, do I simply place the ball way back in my stance and hit it from there, or do I try to move my arc forward by working on weight shift and hip turn? I've assumed that I should do the latter and that's what I've been working on for years, with some progress but by no means total success. Again, I'm hoping this 3 skills book will offer some fresh ideas about this, new things to practice, etc.

Re: i used the 3 skills and nailed it!

Todd:

I just came across a video of Martin Hall. Halfway through he has a drill and a device (that you can easily make) that teaches how to make the proper divot. I plan on trying this myself this week.

Mr. Hall is a QSEM of The Golfing Machine and a top 100 teacher.

Whenever I try intentionally moving a body part I lose whatever fluidness I normaly have. Hopefully the drills in the 3 skills book will elminate this.

Interesting video. I think you could accomplish the same thing using a 2nd tee two inches behind the first, and swing to clip the first (forward) tee without disturbing the second one. Or use just about anything a half inch thick--a marble, whatever.

Re: i used the 3 skills and nailed it!

Joe will be posting a response to the various methods that appear on the surface similar to 3skillsgolf, they are however very different in their own ways and Joe would like to explain why...

I ordered it. Haven't received it yet, but it hasn't even been a week yet. Meanwhile I'm just hammering my hands.
