ya, there are several variations. You can also use clubs, books, balls, tees, the wife's china mugs, etc... I found that it was quicker and easier to get the 2X4s to line up than golf balls.

There are a lot of good drills that don't require any 'aids'. For example, if you are looking for a good drill to keep your wrists still, try this:

Grip your putter with your left hand down on the shaft (about where your right hand would be with a standard grip). Next, using your right hand, hold the top of the putter grip against your left forearm. Now hit some putts. It's amazing how smooth your stroke will become after using this drill!
