Bob I started golfing about a year ago, and I am also a high handicapper. In the short time since I have been golfing I have been through 4 drivers – two older used Callaways (the shafts broke) and a Topflight – pretty good and a Titlist – the older one Tiger used before he went to Nike. I presently have a TaylorMade 540xd – and I really like it.

I compared the Titlest head to head with the Taylormade on golf simulator – which measured distance and I repeatedly got me distance – about 20 yards from the TaylorMade – it is forgiving and long – I preferred the 540 over the 580. If you go to ebay (Canada) Golf town sells a lot of demo driver in great shape cheap – you can pick up a used Taylormade XD for under $200.00 Canadian.

Of course there is no substitute for lessons.

If you want more distance I highly recommend the Speed Stick – my swing speed has increased substantially with it.

Finally, you should consider the golf balls you are using. The golf balls should be made for you swing speed – if you get golf balls that are not in synch with your swing speed you may have unnecessary problems.

Best of luck.
