Hybrid Club

I carry a 2 iron in my bag that only gets used if I need to hit a low long shot through trees or on a dogleg where my drive needs to be out 200 yards from the tee. I also carry a 5 wood that I hit well, but high, and it usually goes about 210 yards.

I have been asked many times why I don't carry a hybrid club rather than my 2 iron but I can honestly say that I don't know what to buy. Hybrids come in many different loft angles, and as I hit my 5 wood and 3 iron fairly well I just have no clue what hybrid to get. (I hit my 3 iron about 190 or so.)

Should I stick with my 2 iron?

If you don't have trouble hitting it, then I'd suggest keeping it.

If you're interested, I'd start with a hybrid that has equal loft to your 2 iron.

My 2 iron has a loft about 19 degrees. My current 5 wood has a loft of 18 degrees. Are you suggesting that I should buy a similarly lofted hybrid?

It's that 'about' word that worries me.

The number stamped on the bottom of the club is the spec that the head manufacturer was aiming for. The tolerance is +/- 1°. In other words, if your 2i is supposed to be 19 and your 5w 18, it could actually be that they're 20 and 17, respectively.

The other thing will be that your 5w is a little longer, adding a touch more speed (so a touch more distance). This is what makes hybrids an interesting game - their CoG is more back and low like a FW, but they're short like irons. However, loft is the trump card in the distance game. The reason one iron is longer or shorter than the other is due to loft, not length. So I'd buy a hybrid with a loft that matches your 2i, and expect a higher ballflight and the same distance.

i have a one iron i use a lot and it gives me a low shot and i find i hit the fairways most time with ease, its loft is 16% i also a have a 3 wood i use that has a 14% loft. i hit the 3 wood about 20 yards further than the one iron and i also hit it higher.
both clubs i use a lot and it gives me a choice of the type of shot i want to plat, with the 3 wood theres not much run on the ball with the one iron there is a lot of run, if on links then the onw iron is a great club but if it rains the 3 wood is better.
i would keep your 2 iron if you get a hybrid as on diffrent days might mean it better with the 2 iron to the hybrid.

Good advice. I think I will buy a hybrid with 19 degs of loft and take it, my 5 wood, and my old 2 iron to the range and see what happens.

Your 2 iron is better for keeping the ball low and/or punching under the trees. The Hybrid should be easier to hit, though you do need to be careful and if possible demo the club. A lot of them have offset face which may be good or a problem depending. It should have a smaller face and shorter shaft then the 5 wood but distance should be about the same.

I believe most pro's have gone to Hybrids (or 5 woods) for the reasons that they are easier to hit, they go higher and stop quicker. (easier for distance control) I have heard several Pro's put their 2 iron back in the bag on windy days.

I am not sure what else is in your bag but a 2i and 5 wood should be somewhat the same distance and most golfers find it hard to carry both.

You are right as I seem to have just about 10 yards difference between my 2 Iron and my 5 wood although there is a big difference in the height I get my 5 wood.

I play with Taylormade 3-PW, Ping SW, Nike Sasquatch driver, 3 & 5 Taylormade Vsteel fairway woods, and a Powerbilt 2 iron.

I've got a Cobra Baffler 3 and 4 Hybrid set up and just love it... betcha you would too... 2I always were too hard to hit for me... the hybrids kinda punt the ball, nice and soft. Easy to control and I've been using the 4 Hybrid as my go to club for chipping off or near the fringe. works great!
