Slat's Journal

12/05/07 7.15am
The day has finally arrived..........
it's the morning of my debut into club competition, the cliffside trophy and its a major! great timing eh?
as i look out of the window it's grey and overcast but thankfully it has stopped raining for now.
the sticks are gleaming like new the bag is packed and ready to go.
ive done a 100 practice swings in the dining room already i stopped as a divot in the carpet isnt very attractive.
ive played the 1st tee shot over and over in my mind at the moment id settle for just playing that one shot really well!
all i need to focus on is taking my time, preshot routine and tempo if i can exercise all those then im sure i will have a good round.
have to go as my bowels are working very efficiently this morning

All the best Slats! Hope it goes your way, and that 1st shot rips down the middle. Looking forward to hearing how you got on.

Divots are fine - some 2 sided tape, a little brush, a little cut, and no-one is the wiser.

Until a kid runs over it with a laundry basket, and pulls it all apart. Then it's cash to have the carpet guys redo it.

Kippers Pedro?

With your handicap we should be talking Quesadila with some Chiilli and Chorizo wshed down with some cheap beer.

Hope it went well.

Re: Smoke me a kipper...I'll be back for breakfast...

well thats the 1st one out of of the way!
in reality i wasnt at the races today!
the only plus points for me was the practise i have put in with driver paid off as i hit 11 out of 11 fairways averaging about 250 yds.
The round seemed a little rushed and i wasnt disciplined emough to consistently carry out my preshot routine which i paid for by hitting some mediocre iron shots.
highlight of the round was a 200yd 3wood draw to 3 feet!
my only consolation was that one of my playing partners who i have played with before commented that i am a far better player than todays round showed

Re: Smoke me a kipper...I'll be back for breakfast...

You sound kind of down on yourself, dude, but 11 out of 11 fairways is awesome - particularly when you were worried about your driving accuracy! Good on ya.

I guess there isn't a golfer on the planet who doesn't know the feeling of the gap between performance and potential, but the main thing is your state of mind, isn't it? You know what you can do. Gutted for you that today didn't go the way you wanted, but everyone you play with seems to know the potential that's there. The wins - seriously - can only be round the corner.

Round one out of the way Slats and not too bloodied! Well done.

Seriously though, Have a try at Greg's right hand hand drill, It has taken me around a year to try it and WOW !!!!! what a difference it makes to fairway shots, mid irons, pitches and chips. Everything straight as a die, I am scarcely playing to over 8 with it.

So what went wrong Slats?

Hitting 11 fairways (I'm sooo jealous) with good distance AND playing off 23 I'd have expected someone of your proven ability to score loads of points (or get a good nett depending on the comp) with a gross in the eighties.

Even if you were not getting the GIR then bogey golf must have been on.

hi robin
no excuses mate
ive focused so much on my long game that my short game wasnt up to it
just couldnt get "in the zone" as they say.
was trying not to think too much mechanics but took it too far i think.
just a case of " after the lord mayors show"
i ve found already that comp play is different to social golf that's something ill get used too.
had that much adrenaline on the par 3 1st i hit my 6 iron about 180yds 20yds through the back of the green
there's always the next one

Yup, and we keep coming back.

With luck next time you'll keep some, if not all, of the driving , hit some approaches, chip well and putt to victory.

Next time I'm your end of the East Lancs I'll come and do the mental caddy coach bit
