The Life of Brian

After reading some of these excellent journals I have decided to join you.

Nothing much to report so far as I have decided (due to the problems I have with my back) to do a little less competitive golf this year. last year was non stop with club competitions, home and away team events and golf society days. I will take part in the upcoming club summer singles and doubles, Club championship, cup competitions, club nights etc and play in most medal events.

So! how is it going in general?

I have been practising at the range two to three nights a week working on various aspects. One area I have been trying to incorporate is the RHD along with the takeaway used in Joe Dante's "New Golf swing" book. this is really different for me but I am pleased with the results. It promotes a good takeaway and keeps the left wrist set properly through the swing, I am also achieving really good ball compression and nipping the ball so nicely off the ground, this results in some impressively straight shots with a great shape. On the course I am dropping the ball so nicely onto par 3 greens and my approach shots from 150 yards in are so repeatably better.

I do need to improve my driving, it was the best part of my game for so long but recently has dropped off a bit. I take a lesson once every couple of months so will work on that next.

Monthly medal next Sunday, will report back on that one. Thanks for listening.

Re: The Life of Brian

Wow! Good to read the journal of one of the (and I choose my words carefully ) 'big hitters' of the forum!

Good luck with the medal, Brian, and best wishes for recovery from the ongoing back issues

Hi BD,

"Big Hitter" well not at the moment, that's what I have to improve now.

Keep up the good work, sounds like a little more consistency with your swing and you will be playing some really good golf. I like your journal Bulldog it really brightens up the site.

Re: The Life of Brian

Nothing much to report at the moment. Played in the June monthly medal and came in with a 78 which placed me third on count back.

Still not happy with my driving at the moment, I have been messing around with different drivers for a while and to be honest don't like any of them. For may years my driving has been the flagship of my game but recently I am not happy with it, don't get me wrong its not that bad but I seem to have lost a bit of accuracy, a bit of distance and a bit of feel for the shot.

I was practising with my 3 wood recently and felt that I could hit the ball so cleanly with a nice shape to the shot, this got me thinking about how I can do that with a club with a much smaller head. I then spent some time hitting with a couple of large headed drivers I have and came to the conclusion that I just don't like them, I don't have the feel for the strike or the precision to shape a shot the way I can with my 3 wood.

Went home and set out on an expedition to explore the darkest parts of my garage that I have not visited for many years. Under heap of old golf bags I found an old steel headed 1 wood that I used for a while many years ago. Dusted it off and took it to the garden for a swing. Well! the head looked the size of a duck egg but straight away I could sense the control and feel for this club. Took it to the range last night and was impressed how well I could strike the ball with it, the "Tink" it gave on contact was great and the lower penetrating flight was impressive. The shaft is a bit naff and the head is not good quality but it worked.

Today I have been on Ebay and picked up a classic Callaway Big Bertha 111 Steelhead for a song, should arrive in a few days. Will keep you posted.

The BB111 Steelhead arrived today, beautiful club can't wait to try it. Wait a minute!!! Its bloody left handed, DOOH!! What a plonker.

Looking again at the Ebay Ad, it's not very clear. Rang the seller and they will exchange it, just have to see what they have

Re: The Life of Brian

If I recall correctly, at one time, the great Sir Garfield Sobers was a single figure capper BOTH left AND right handed.....

It's something to aim for.....

Cheers
