Need help..have questions about my club fitting

Got fitted today for rifle steel shafts....

i normally hit my 6 iron 175.....

guy put me in a rifle shaft 3.7 and i was hitting the ball 185-195......

said my swing speed was pretty high.....isnt a 3.7 a shaft for those that carry a 6 140 and have a low swing speed?

I'm sure Ben will respond to this later; me, I have absolutely no idea but if a fitter gained me over 10 yards and had me hitting pro-type distances I would care less if he'd stuck in a senior ladies flex , I'd just shake him by the hand and walk away smiling.

Be interested to see if the extra yards get you down into single figures (assuming your profile is up to date).

Yes, the rifle 3.7 is a 'stiffer' A flex. But as long as your not having directional control issues, put your ego back to bed and enjoy your clubs!

Re: Need help..have questions about my club fitting

no ego....just was told i have a athletic higher club speed swing....from looking at the site a 3.7 is for a player with a carry distance of 140 yards with their 6 iron...that is not me......

i hit my driver 270-280......6 iron 175.......my goal is higher more consistent ball flight.....

this just doesent make sense to me...but i am not a club fitter...i am going to call him when he gets in around 2pm..he is a rifle authorized fitter....but for that kinda money I would like to know why i am in that shaft.

Re: Need help..have questions about my club fitting

There are a number of possible reasons why you were placed in a 3.7.

Perhaps you liked the feel of the 3.7 best in the demo club. Perhaps you hit it best. A softer shaft will promote a higher ball flight, flex for flex in the same line.

If your swing is highly consistent, it could very well be that the softer flex isn't hurting you ie it's not causing you to get handsy and/or you're not overpowering the shaft, lagging the face open.

Like I said, I wouldn't sweat it. As long as you're hitting it straight (or rather, with your preferred ball flight) then I wouldn't worry about what the shaft is supposed to do or who it's supposed to be for. As a fitter, it's my job to worry about what it actually is doing in the hands of the golfer who's swinging it.

Re: Need help..have questions about my club fitting

i was even considering a graphite shaft. I am 32 played contact sports and have an athletic build... he even looked at my TP driver and thought I should have gone with a 75 gram shaft......this all doesent add up to me.....but i am not a club fitter.....i know what feels right though.....my 52 callaway tour has never been right....i told him it felt like a 55 degree wedge......it was between 54-55......

my swing on my irons are extremely consistent........my driver on the other hand i do tend to swing extremely hard and go at it.....sometimes i go 75%....my irons swings are always the same.......

Re: Need help..have questions about my club fitting

I'll assume with a consistent iron swing that you were probably seeing the best results at 3.7

Personally, I've got hands of stone, and have played X100's tipped to length. LOL I find with tip soft shafts I tent to hook the ball, as it feels like the ball is in cement.

Re: Need help..have questions about my club fitting

no, my swing speed is consistent. i generally swing my 6 as hard as my 8....my driver i swing like a vanilla gorilla

i spoke with the shop keeper

he said the butt is extra stiff......the tip is not....so the shaft plays like a 6.0 but will get the ball up in the air....so the ball will land softly and will not roll which is what i want.

he was very basic.....so if you can translate that better i would appreciate it.....i told him if he reccomended a pink shaft with yellow ribbons i would trust their professional judgement i just like to know the why's and hows......

Re: Need help..have questions about my club fitting

Could it be that 3.7 was a torque value?

A rifle 6.0 sounds much closer to what I'd fit you into, and is probably more like what you're getting.

Maybe ask him what the 3.7 is all about?

If it were me, I'd be playing my original gamers in the money game, and bust out the new sticks after a couple range sessions!

Re: Need help..have questions about my club fitting

they are 3.7s

i hit some on the range...tended to have a pronounced draw and the ball flight was lower than expected but shot off pretty powerfully....

we will see tomorrow when it counts!
