Titliest 905R thru-bore questions

Hi,

I removed a 905R head from its shaft, which is a thru-bore type. As I didn't have a shaft extractor, I had to make sure that I had heated up the epoxy sufficiently enough so I could pull the head out more easily. However, I think the prolonged heat to the head had caused a small plastic plug to pop out on the sole, between the red triangles. What is this for, and can I get a replacement? It looks like the very tip of a shaft plug for thru-bore installations.

Speaking of which, the shaft plug also popped out from heat expansion (very amusing seeing this happen!). In which order would you install one of these, would you pop it into the shaft after trimming, then insert into the head and then trim the correct angle on the shaft and inserted plug once epoxied? How do you trim it off? I read somewhere that you could use a grinding disc but what type of wheel?

The plug between the arrows is most likely just the epoxy plug used to fill the hole where they squirted the rat glue in.

As for putting the bore through plug in, put your shaft in to the insertion depth you like. Dry fit your plug, mark where it exits the sole, cut it off.

I think both golfsmith and golfworks sell a finishing wheel to restore the shine and lustre back to the sole of the club after you grind the rest of the plug down with either a belt sander or grinding wheel.

Is the plug glued in or would it be snug enough to hold in?

Just going back to the finishing wheel, they costs a bomb! I think it's the 3M Scotch-brite wheel, £45+tax here, but I'm shure that is for a high volume one. just need one to fit on a drill for the hobbyist.

What is normally the order of process when finishing off the sole? Do I sand the plug flush with medium then fine sandpaper, then remove scratches with a nylon wheel, then buff up with a finishing wheel? I've got the 1" 3M trizact belt for preparing graphite tips - could I use this in place of the finishing wheel?

You could try the trizact belt - but you may want to use a beat up head to see what kind of finish you get. You may have to go buy some 600 or 1200 grit sandpaper (also known as wet sandpaper), I've also heard of guys using #000 steel wool.

But yes, you get the plug flush then do scratch removal.

Yes, I have the trizact belt, but not the sander yet, arrives next week and will give that a go. Think I will use a dremel to grind it down as far as I can to the sole beforre using more delicate techniques
