New Iron adjustment?

I finally went and got fitted for some new stick's last week. Ended up getting KZG's with mfs 40 + graphites ( boy it's different hitting graphite in irons after being used to steel ). I have been to the range once and played league last night ( shot the best this year so far ).

Irons are much more accurate but noticed right off the bat that they seemed to be about 1 club shorter than I was used too. I have been trying to slow my swing down a bit to help with control and it definately helped last night. Anywho the fitter hasn't made any adjustments to them yet ( lie, loft ), told me to go play a few round's and we'd go from there. Reading on KZG site I noticed that most of the Irons are at a higher loft ( not much, 1.5 to 2 degrees per ).

Should I have him knock them down 1 degree and if so, is that 1 degree gonna make that much of a difference in distance?

Thx

Re: New Iron adjustment?

The other consideration is the length of your new irons. IIRC, graphite shafted clubs are 1" longer than their steel companions. Therefore, if your old clubs and new clubs are the same length, you're effectively playing with shorter clubs. Also, having your lofts weakened by 2* immediately cuts your club selection by one half (assuming a 4* seperation between clubs). SO it goes to reason that even if the lengths are OK, you're out at least 1/2 a length.

But here's the litmus test: Take your old iron and a new iron that are as close to the same loft as possible. Hit them side by side. (Or as easterns like to say, side by each), and check your distances. It may be a case of just needing to learn how to hit your new sticks.

A new highlight: Golfing the home course on Christmas Day.

I say it too often: If it's golf club shaped, you can play with it.

For the record, I'm a club doctor, not a swing doctor.

Re: New Iron adjustment?

New stick's were made a 1/2" longer to fit me the way they should. I tried to hit both set's together and am shorter with the new one's. I noticed last night at league that my accuracy was MUCH better but was at least a 1/2 a club short. That's why I wondered if I had him adjust the loft's 1 or 2 degrees if that would make up the difference. I have to go back to him next week, so I'll ask him about it and see what he think's. Again thanks...

Re: New Iron adjustment?

For 1/2 club, I'm sure a bend 2* stronger would be the cure. Or, just adjust to your new distances, and save yourself the cost of the bend.

Re: New Iron adjustment?

Just a little update. It's been almost 2 month's now with the new Iron's. Had the fitter make the proper bend's awhile back ( most were off 2 - 3 degrees ). I am still a good half a club shorter .

The differences were steel to graphite, swingweight from C - 9 to D - 1 and the new stick's are a 1/2 longer.

I have made the adjustment's with the club distances and as stated they are much more accurate, but for whatever reason it's still buggin me that the new one's are shorter. Just don't understand how club's that are 15 year's newer ( technology wise ) and that are fitted better for me could be shorter?

Re: New Iron adjustment?

If you were hitting blades, before and the new ones are a cavity back you can lose some distance for the better feel and more accuracy. Half a club lenght is no bother. It also could be because you have slowed your swing down that you have lost the distance.

Re: New Iron adjustment?

Same balls, went from cavitys to progressive cavity. I got this from somebody else:

"Just because they are lighter does not necessarily mean they will go the same distance even if they were the same loft. Sometimes, the slightly heavier swing weight of the DG shafts allows us to make a better golf swing. When you go lighter you usually go through a transition period. The transition period lasts a while because you will tend to get over the top of a lighter iron where you were dropping your arms better in the downswing as a result of the heavier DG shafts."

The difference between the old Dynamic Gold steel shafts and the Apache MFS 40+ graphites is almost 40 grams, but he bumped the swingweight up. Maybe these shaft's are just a bit light for me.

I'll play with them for awhile and see what happens. If I'm not happy by the end of next spring I'll probally go back to steel shafts and split the difference weight wise between the 2 and see what happens..

Re: New Iron adjustment?

Are you scoring better with the new clubs? Initially it sounded like you were but you didn't mention it in the update.
