How should I measure a 4 year old for

clubs? My little guy is only 4 and wants to hang out in the back yard with me while I'm putting and chipping but I can't figure out how long to make his clubs.

From his finger tips to the ground it's 18". I want to make him a putter and a sand wedge but how long should I make each club?

Hi Mully,

The way I fit my 4 year old (who is the size of your average 6 year old) was to dry fit the shaft into the head, put her into a good address position, and mark the shaft where her good position had her gripping it. This left some butt end hanging out, but that was fine - it showed me where to cut and grip.

It's currently a perfect size for her. As she grows, I'll epoxy in extensions until I've epoxied 2" of exensions, then I'll reshaft.

For her putter, I cut it to half her height, then had her address a putt with it (no grip). Same idea, just to leave a little butt sticking out the end. Cut and grip.

Again, I'll extend it as necessary until it's time for a new shaft.

For years now I have been cutting clubs down for my son, after years of trial and error I have discovered the best option to be....................buy the cheap single ladies club from the spare or test box with grafite shafts. Then cut the club just below the grip, this will leave you a club that is still to long, get your child to grip 'down' the shaft until it the head sits nicley on the ground. Now the important bit, put a chalk line where the bottom hand if furthest down the grip. Dont cut here measure a full grip length then cut at the highest point, double rap and put a childs grip on.

The club should now be about two inches to long which allows growing space, try to stick with one wood, one iron around 8, and a putter.

lowpost, whats your experience with putter extensions. I was always told the putter ends up feeling very dead if you put a plug in the end.

I ask cos I have a Liquidmetal FS-2 Limited Edition putter I cut down to 30 inches when I was going through my "Jack Nicklaus putting style" phase and due to the nature of the metal alloy used for the head I cant remove the original shaft without damaging the club. If I could even get a couple of inches added it would meanI could use it again if I wanted to.

Oh yea, I just buy ready made kids clubs from Wal Mart type places, they are only needed for a couple of years a set and I can get them proper bats when they are tall enough. Dont think its worth the hassle of custom fitting at that age. I would worry I was custom fitting their game to the clubs I made rather than the other way round.

I bought a 33" putter (for the head), extended it 2", and had no problems with it. Sold it for an Odyssey 2 ball White Hot (Which was sold for a MentorSports Triad 2. Which may get bumped by a MentorSports Duet).
