Question Geek and Bang Stuff

I'm interested in getting the new "Fail Safe" or more likely "Dot Com This" driver by Geek Golf. Steve Almo is the designer and used to be the pres of Bang I believe. Anyone tried any of the components from this new company? I want to get a new driver with more loft than my 8.5* TM 300 as my buddies have TM 320's and 360's in 9.5 and I can hit farther with them. The Mello Yello and Bangster OL also caught my eye from Bang. I like the idea of a loud and long driver and have seen mostly good reviews on the Bang stuff, so I figure the Geek stuff has to be pretty good.

Do these things require ReMax swing speeds or are these equally suited for lower swingspeed golfers? I know I can't take advantage of the 8.5* in my bag now.

Re: Geek and Bang Stuff

Durt, a ReMax swing needs a ReMax shaft.

I've got a 10.5º Dot Com This waiting for an Aldila NV 65.

I'm waiting for a few more components, then I'm going to shaft 'er up and take 'er to the ol' indoor range.

The Geek headcover is the coolest I've ever seen.

Re: Geek and Bang Stuff

I put a low kick shaft in R flex (True Temper Rocket to be exact) in my 8.5 to compensate for the low loft and it has helped...I'm still working out the bugs in my swing but most recently I have been avg 250 drives on the course and 160 with a 7 iron. Any shaft/loft recommendations?

Re: Geek and Bang Stuff

I would suggest (without seeing your swing), more loft (10º) in your driver, and an Aggressive nRage in R.

I would recommend you stick with what you have.
A 250 drive is more than adquate as is a 160 7 iron (actually ,a 160 yard 7 iron is quite a distance for an amateur player).

What you don't mention is your average shot direction.
I can drve the ball over 300 yards but I couldn't tell you which way it was going.
If I ease off a bit (which I do) I can stripe the ball between 230 and 260 ,usually in the short stuff.

I would trade at least 30 yards for accuracy without hesitation.

Distance isn't everything.

Re: Geek and Bang Stuff

I got my swing analyzed by some of the members on here and found a couple of the tips helped my distance immensely. I've always been 1-2 clubs shorter than my golfing buddies. My ball flight has been pretty straight with slight fade that can become a bad slice if I really try to muscle it.

I know jack squat about club making. I found a guy nearby that put the shaft in my driver that dabbles in club repair but hadn't heard of the Geek Golf stuff. I've got an old TT shaft(ei 70 2) with mid kick point that I had in the 8.5 degree that didn't give enough carry that would probably work pretty good with a 10.5. Really, It's just a matter of picking the Bangster or the Fail Safe. Also, one of my calls to a component seller said that they are expecting a price hike in the Bang components in the near future.

Re: Geek and Bang Stuff

Well, if it makes you feel better, Almo left Bang this summer (end of August, I believe) and founded Geek Golf - so Geek is pretty new.

I do know that the Fail Safe is a 'carry' head, while the Dot Com This is a 'roll' head (in other words, they're equally long, but the FS does it with carry, while the DCT puts some roll on the ball).

As for the shaft, I'm not 100% convinced it was the complete limiting factor in your distance lack. An 8.5º is great - as long as you're hitting up on the ball, so that you can get ~ 12º of launch; or if your swing speed is 130+ MPH, so that the speed is generating your 12º launch.

I've noticed a 7 yard increase going from a 9º head to a 10º head, all with my meagre 108MPH swing speed.

I've got 11º, 12º and 14º heads that I'm going to try out, just to see where my distance is maximised. Unfortunately, I don't have a launch monitor.

Re: Geek and Bang Stuff

Well, got the Fail Safe in 10.5 last week and shafted it with the TT ei shaft. It is painted this dark metallic burgandy that seems almost black indoors but really looks deep and rich out in the light. The shaft has a lower bend point then I thought and feels a bit whippy. When I get my tax returns I'm most likely going to buy a new shaft in a R flex with a higher bend point. Hopefully I can pull this one without screwing everything up and tip it 1/2 inch or so and firm it up. There's no paint on the hosel area so I don't have to worry about cooking the paint there, just the shaft.

I really like this driver as the ball just flies and flies. I like the sound, plenty loud, although a friend told me it sounded like a soup can. The first range session I took my old 8.5 with me and hit it and watched all my balls rolling 250 sign. I pulled out the Geek and the first time I hit I said holy cow outloud cause the ball lit off the head louder and higher than anything I'd ever seen and flew the 250 sign. There's a line of trees about 270 out and I was rolling the ball right at the edge of the trees. I think if i can get it to stay down a bit more initially that I can get a ball out to 300 yards, like if I could get the same penatrating flight I do with the 8.5...guess my launch angle is too high and I could bring the ball back in my stance now that I think about it(that or i'm just too weak/don't know what i'm talking about). Perhaps it's the design of the head as it's supposed to have "scarry carry" and the Dot Com This! head by Geek is supposed to roll.

I enjoyed putting this club together, hardest part was not touching it while the epoxy set up (which suprisingly to me held up). This is the first club I've built and I need to stop right now as I really want to get another 10.5 head couple 9's and a bunch of shafts. My 4 iron has been out of action about 2 months now as the shaft is bent and I think I should reshaft them all if I'm going to do the one.

Re: Geek and Bang Stuff

Nice work on the Fail Safe.

As for your 4 iron... if you do the whole set, you'll be a goner. You've already headed down the path to the dark side.

And yes, the Fail Safe is the carry head (higher launching than the DCT). I wanted one, but the DCT was cheaper.

Re: Geek and Bang Stuff +Some PICs+

Uncapable of failing?

Notice the power bulges?...make for a good alignment aid. Also as a plus for me...no skymarks yet after 60 or so balls (*knocks on wood*)

been raining all weekend
