Does one size fit most??

Off-the-shelf clubs all seem to be the same length and lie angle, grips look different but the size seems the same.

Question: Who do these clubs fit?

Club manufactures seem to have come up with a standerd fit. I assume they're for the average person. Who is the average person? These clubs arn't for a 6'6" 300 lb guy, nor for a 5'2" 100 lb gal. There must be 1000's of people that could buy these clubs off-the-shelf and have the perfect fit, who are they?

It's a really good question, the answer is a little harder....................................

Of course we are all different not just in height but some have short arms, long arms short and long legs etc not just height, "THEY" say that the average guy is around 5ft 10 inches....................and a standard set should be ok..........bull' not only are we all built different but we stand and swing different, moving an inch further from the ball changes the lie angle, the speed we swing changes the lie angle as the shaft bends more.

The truth is there is no standard set only standard people who are silly enough to fall for sales talk when begining to play the game, however one of these set should be ok to start the game with and engrain the fundiments of the game, ruin them with miss hits etc then get rid.

Once you reach a reasonable standard with a repeatable swing then you need a proper fitting, the shafts are pretty standard for all but the very expert, a standard regular for swing speeds upto around 90 mph and stiff for over 90mph. Lofts and lies need setting and your shaft length depends on you and your build. My clubs are 1/4 inch shorter than standard, I'm 5ft 8 inchs.

The simple answer is most people don't join GTO and get as much information as possible about the game and use all this knowledge to better their game.

IMO, off-the-rack clubs are a fine purchase... as long as you got a fitting first, and will get them bent to your needs afterwards.

I'm 6' (so a little taller than the statistical average), and all static fitting charts tell me I should be playing clubs that are 2º upright, with midsize grips.

I prefer clubs that are 1º flat with standard grips. But I bend 'way over' for my swing. I also play clubs with a ton of offset, because I'm not happy with how high I hit the ball.

I guess my point is that one size can fit most (as humans we'll adapt our swing to whatever club is in our hand), but there is a definite range where we swing best - and 'standard' (which there is no such thing across the industry, by the way) may not be it.

I say it too often: If it's golf club shaped, you can play with it.

For the record, I'm a club doctor, not a swing doctor.

The reason I'm asking is this;

I've been playing for two years and usually finnish a round in the low 100's. I'm 5'6" 140 lb and slice 7 drives out of 18. I got fitted with a new set last fall. My old clubs, off-the-shelf, were 1/4 the cost of the new ones, have the same length and lie angle as the new ones. The difference is in the shaft and grips.

If I was hitting it harder and had bigger hands, my old ones would probably be perfect??!!

I'll play out the upcoming sesson with my new boys and as I get a little longer and straighter on my drives I'll try out my old guys again. Who knows, by then my old set might turn into my new set in 2007.

Keith, that's part of the fitting process. If you're part of the population that gets on with standard loft and lie, then that makes your life easy, as you've found - get the flex and grip size right, and you're off to the races.
