| Club fitting questions. I am in the market for a new set of irons and I also want to get fitted for shafts for my woods. Current clubs are Titleist DCI 962s, 1/2" short and 2 degrees flat. Woods are 3wd - TM R580, TM R7 - stiff, 9.5 degrees. I've been as low as a 6 handicap but back problems have prevented me from practicing and playing as much as I like so I'm hovering around a 10 to 12 right now. My swing is pretty consistent but I'm hitting everything off the toe with my irons. I'm hitting my woods pretty good. My question is, how much consistency should I develop before getting fitted for a new set of irons and wood shafts? I went for just a rough fitting a couple months ago where one of the pros told me I needed to go 2 degrees upright which was 4 degrees more than I was fitted with my Titleist irons a few years prior (2 degrees flat). I couldn't believe this was right. Even with the new Titleist irons. I went home and played with my swing for a few hours and found I was regripping at the top of my backswing and shutting down the face dramatically at impact. This was causing the toe to hit first. This caused a little skepticism about being fitted. I didn't understand why this guy didn't see this instead of just telling my I needed 2 degrees upright. It's not like he was pressed for time. I was there for almost an hour and a half and he was having me hit all kinds of different heads and shafts. We were having a great time but again I'm hesitant about my next fitting for new clubs. Any advice or comments are greatly appreciated. Sorry for the rant. Thanks... |

| Re: Club fitting questions. There is a real problem in the fitting world right now. I don't believe there are enough experts in this trade and it is really hard to find one. I live in North Crolina, US and I don't know one club fitter I would trust in fitting me. |

| Re: Club fitting questions. Chad. Get to Gastonia, and see Bryant (Ken is good, too) at LowPro Golf (the store may be My Club Maker now) 800.654.8764. Tell him Ben from Canada sent you. He'll be the first, last, and best fit you'll ever find. howletus, it's possible that your swing has changed. Now, four degrees of change? Unlikely, to me, but possible. As far as I'm concerned, if you're going through major swing changes, hold onto your gear until you're done (read: if you're in the middle of lessons, finish them first). Otherwise, if you've got a repeatable swing (even if it's repeated toe hits), adjust your gear. Now, you ask about reshafting - this may not be necessary. If the only thing that's really changed is that you're standing up more, then you'll need to get your clubs bent upright (like your fitter suggests). However, it's true that there are lots of people but few experts (and I'm no expert). However, I got a helluva compliment today, (but I'm still no expert). I'd suggest solving your regripping at the top problem, then see if your toe hits don't disappear.
