How Low Is Too Low?

Last year I played the KZG Gemini 395 driver with a 7.5 Loft. This year I wanted to upgrade to the 460 model. When I emailed KZG customer service to see if they make it in a 7.5 loft they said, " no, with the correct shaft I shouldn't be using anything lower then a 9 degree loft". What do you guys/gals think?

Hi Golfjeep,

Its not what we think it what the Launch Angle machine thinks............find one before you buy, they are pretty popular now at stores and some larger golf clubs, you may even find you need a 12 degree or a 7.5, get fitted and you will never regret it.

You launch angle should be around 14 degrees off the face, the machine will of course help you choose the right loft for you and your swing.

Good Luck

Ian.

Re: How Low Is Too Low?

I think it all depends on your setup.

A guy I golf with just changed his setup, and now uses a 6° head, with a super stiff shaft. Bombs it as long as ever, and hits it sky high.

His launch angle has actually improved.

This article is a little old, but it has some good stats on launch angle and spin of some pros.

I agree with above, that it is all about the launch monitor. My swing speed varies between 108-112 mph during the season, and I was told that for that speed my launch angle should be between 12-13* and my spin should be lower than 2500 rpm. I was able to get 13* and about 2400 rpm with a 9.5* driver (~165-170 mph ball speed), mid kick stiff shaft. This driver fitting upped my averages from about 250 with my old driver to 280+ with my new one.

If you swing up at the ball enough to still get a good launch angle, the lower loft can help lower your backspin. I've searched high and low to find a chart outlining the ideal launch angle and spin for different swing/ball speeds, but I can't find it. All I know is that the trend for faster swingers is lower angle, lower spin, and for slower swingers is higher angle, higher spin. So you can take my stats as a starting point and go from there.

Matt, if you're really interested in playing with launch angle, swing speed, spin rates, etc, head to www.wishongolf.com and give them a call. Then buy their trajectory software. You can play with every variable you can imagine.
