Can i use old grip?

Hi guys, i am just about to replace the grip on my 2ball putter with a 2 thumb grip, is there anyway I can remove the old grip without destroying it?

OK - the 'easy' way first. (FWIW, IMO there's no easy way to get a grip off that's been attached with solvent and 2 sided tape - let alone a putter grip (the hardest ones to save of all - my success rate is somewhere around 50%).

That said, use an air compressor (not 12v car tire type). Squirt grip solvent down the vent hole (be generous!). Put the protector tube over the grip, and add the air. Gently twist the grip to help it release.


If you don't have a compressor, the other method I'm aware of is to inject grip solvent under the grip (a syringe slipped up the mouth of the grip is the method). Then you use a 'grip saver' tool (I've seen wire coat hangers used), to work the grip free of the tape.

It's certainly not easy, in either case. (It's dead easy for a grip installed with air). By the same token, the grip is only a few bucks... and it sounds like you're flirting with the darkside.... so you might as well order grips for your irons along with a replacement putter grip!

Installing grips is much easier, yes. Again, air is easier than the conventional method.

To install you don't even need air (if you are bloody-minded and strong).

I regripped a few of my clubs (steel shafts) by:
(1) cutting off the old grip
(2) removing the double sided tape (lucky could peel it off)
(3) little bit of spit in the grip mouth, and work it around a little
(4) work the grip down using a twisting and pushing motion and bracing the clubhead with my feet (sitting)
(5) line it up
(6) let it dry (24h)

It's pretty ghetto, but no, there's nothing wrong with it. It's actually quite like the air method (but assumably much slower.)

The removal of the old grip tape can be quite tedious... the older the worse it seems to be.

The only thing you may see (regardless of method) is slipping if the inside core of the grip is equal to or less than the diameter of the butt of the shaft.

I always put a layer of masking tape on, just to be on the safe side.

I found this with when I did a club with DGSL X-100. I thought I need the parallel tip for a used head but when I got to golfworks it turns out that I needed tapered. Forgot to check if the butt diameter is different. So now I have slippage because the butt diameter is different:
Taper = 0.600
Parallel = 0.610 (the only one in the Dynamic Gold SL line)

Oh well, another trip to golf works.

I like ghetto. I live in a townhouse and I have no room for even a workbench, so no vice. Ya gotta make do with what you got.

Im not scottish! I dont have my name on the tees but I do tie elastic to them so I dont lose them, I have had the same tee for the last 16 years!! LOL And by the way the grip isnt that old, but i am wondering wether to just cut it off!
