Brian's Crimbo Pressy

I have been using a set of Callaway irons for some years and have never gelled with them, I suspect the shafts are too long, the wrong flex, the lie angle is wrong and they just feel too heavy for me.

I have decided to get a new set and have them fitted. I tried some Forgan clubs from my local Pro-shop this week and although they are fairly budget price I really liked them and had some excellent results.

The question I am asking is: do you think it's good policy to purchase a well made but budget set and have them fitted, or buy a brand name off the shelf?

Too tight to buy a decent set eh.... Dont most pro shops do custom fitting on the big brands as well as the cheapo sets? I bought the Mizuno MP-32s for about £500 and got all the custom fitting for nowt. Which ever way you go custom fitting is essential!

Well, um yes, kind of. Although like your tees I can tie some elastic to them.

Actually, Forgan of St Andrews are the oldest club maker in the world (I think) and although not the most expensive are very nice quality. I have spent a lot on expensive brands over the years and sometimes (Like with these Callaways) have not got on with them.

Mind some fitting just means choosing the correct shaft flex. I would get the lie adjusted on each club, the correct length and flex and any bending required.

I must admit Ive never heard of Forgan

At the absolute least, you need to dynamically fit the lie angle on every club (not just 1 club and the rest are bent from that. Come on, we're not stupid).

Fitted clubs help your game - there's no debating it. Either the clubs fit your swing, or you fit your swing to the club.

definately go for the fitted mate
i had off the rack mizuno mx15's and i loved em but i got fitted for apex irons (apex who?) and they are the dogs dangly bits
my distance and accuracy has improved tenfold.
if they suit you and your game who cares who makes them!

I will get the clubs fitted and go with these Forgans, not because I can save a few pounds but because I know that I will not be disappointed with quality and I guess if I feel confident with them then that's the deciding factor.

my friend had forgans iron and he plays well with them and they look a nice club, few years old now. you cant make clubs for over 100 years and not know how to turn out a good club. there a a few scottish club makers still making good quality clubs at a really good price, "letter and sayers being two others and there is one near north berwick i forget there name. you get good fitted clubs for not a lot on money, that dont sound so bad to me.

Just had a club fitting session. They checked a range of clubs with differing lie angles. The club face and bottoms were taped and I hit a number of balls off a board that left marks on the tape to indicate where the club was grounding. They also checked my swing speed and measured from wrist to ground.

The results of all this was that their standard set of clubs gave optimum results, the board marks were slap between the central lines while the others were towards the toe and heel. The shaft lengths and flex were also correct (Standard flex and length).

So! I can have my new clubs as an early present.

Great story, Forgan should be fine, I like a man that goes with what he likes and not just the name.........................says a guy with Taylormade everything.

The reason for my imput is that I used to be two degrees flat, but on my last set I went for a fitting at the Belfry and tested just about everything, mainly for the fun factor and to try the new driving range, I came out with standard everything, I hit off the board and the marks were dead centre, needed stiff shafts thats all.

By it's great to be Mr standard, browse and buy.

Yes, us Taylor shop window adonis types do have that advantage

I use Ping Driver, Taylormade V steel fairway woods and Vokey wedges, bit of a mix.
