Custom Fitting

Saturday I am going to be fit for my callaway x-tours.

The guy charged 5 bucks per loft/lie adjustment.
He comes highly reccomended.

Anything I should look out for?

One question is very rarely do shafts have to be replaced? I hit a 5 iron 190ish and have stiff (not X) true temper irons. I dont want to high grossed by this guy

Re: Custom Fitting

As long as they're not bore-throughs, it should be OK.

How do you like your dispersion? If it's OK, then perhaps you don't need a reshaft. If you'd like it tighter, try an X flex. If he's a custom guy, then perhaps reshaft a single iron, see how it works. If you like it, do the rest. If you don't, he puts the old one in. Easy peasy.

Re: Custom Fitting

X would be way too stiffmy biggest concern is getting the ball higher in the air with the irons...i may have him fot my driver with a new shaft but I do like the stock reax

Re: Custom Fitting

Trajectory up? Solution one is bend your lofts weaker. This will increase trajectory and decrease distance.

Solution two is to find an iron head with a low and back center of gravity.

Solution three (assuming a mid-late to late release) is to find a low kick point, soft tip shaft.

Re: Custom Fitting

would it decrease distance if the ball stays in the air longer? Right now I put the ball more forward in my stance to get a higher trajectory. Hopefully I wont have to change shafts but I will listn to the guy.

Re: Custom Fitting

There's a difference between staying in the air longer vs going higher or lower...

It would be interesting to see if 'hangtime' is any different between a 3i and a 9i.

Trajectory software seems to state that while swing speed is within 10 mph, the hang time is within a half-second between a 3i and 9i (even though trajectories and lofts are different). Assuming that's true, then no ball is 'in the air' any longer with one iron than it is another.

The distance decrease would come with a loft increase - it's the reason your 5 iron goes farther than your 8 iron - loft.

Out of curiosity, why do you want a higher ball flight?

I say it too often: If it's golf club shaped, you can play with it.

For the record, I'm a club doctor, not a swing doctor.

Re: Custom Fitting

Esp. with my 6-pw I want the ball to land softly on greens with little or minimal roll. If I hit a 7 iron 155 I want it to hit at 150 and roll five yards. My irons currently hit at 145 and go 155

Re: Custom Fitting

Trajectory will help. I played snake eyes 600XC's for this very reason - the lofts were a little weaker, and the CoG was back and low. It helped balls to land softly, but then the longer the ball is in the air, the more the wind can wreak havoc on it. So I moved along to Wishon 560's - higher and more forward CoG and less offset. I've learned that 2 things really go towards how your ball reacts on the green - the type of ball you play and how you hit the ball.

For example, I just ran out of MaxFli Revolution Tour balls (where my ball would take one hop and stop). I bought a box of MaxFli BlackMax balls. My ball started taking one hop and sucking back 1 to 3 feet. At the same time, I bought some TopFlite Strata TL Tours. These balls release about 4 feet. My ballstriking has been about the same for all these.

However, it seems as though you're playing 'check up nicely' balls (ProV1, HX Tour, B330)... so I'd guess that you're not compressing the ball well - which doesn't generate enough spin to hold greens.

So, unless you make a swing change, you're heading in the right direction (throwing the ball way up in the air to help stop it).

Re: Custom Fitting

i get great spin with my wedges...my irons are so so.....

really 60,52,54-9 iron I get good spin...i feel like i pinch the ball well....i dont feel comfortable taking the same pinching swing with anything lower than a 9 iron.

I dont want to work to get the ball up..if it is windy I will work to keep it down lower.

Re: Custom Fitting

It's that same pinching swing that will give you more stopping power with your other irons. It will also add more spin which, all other things being equal, will add more height to your shots.
