On Changing Shafts/Club Heads

I have an old driver that I use to hit very well. Just before I quit using it due to a storage door accident, I had replaced the shaft. No damage to the shaft, but the club head did not fair so well. I believe the club head was in the 360-380cc range. (Older 1990s driver)

Here's my question. If I were to take that shaft used on the old, damaged club head, and put it on a 460cc head, would there be a difference in playabilty due to the 100+/- cc difference in club heads? I intend to have a club maker make the switch some day. Just wondering about the playability right now. Thanks in advance. GJS

Classic answer: It depends.

If all the specs save volume are the same, then the shaft should play very close to the same in a bigger head. If you talk to your clubbuilder about what you're looking for, I'm sure they can fit you into something close. Heck, the SMT Spectrum is only 391cc's - you could even get the head size back.

Thank you LP-42 for your response. Actually I still use a smaller headed driver. The 460cc head is on a broken shaft that I fished out of trash can. It's previous owner had decided he did not want it any more after a few errant drives. Thought I would put the two good parts together, and see what I came up with. Thanks again. GJS

Give 'er a go. Worst case scenario, you don't like it, and you put your old combo back together. One word of advice - make sure you mark the current shaft and head for orientation before pulling it apart. That way, when you put it back together, you can ensure that no mojo is lost.
