Pitching wedge or Sand wedge?

Okay, so I have a new set of problems. I can now easily fly my pitching wedge over the green from 100 and within. Used to be I would be happy to make the green with a pitching wedge. Now its a sand wedge and/or gap wedge depending on conditons. So, when do I choke down a pitching wedge or should I continue to try to fly it high onto the green with my sand wedge? Also, how far should I be hitting my lob wedge (60 degree), it goes about 60 yards after going straight up in the air or can be stretched to 70 or so after taking a divot.

Re: Pitching wedge or Sand wedge?

I get 135 yards from my pw, and 80 out of my lob so you distance are pretty much in sync.I get about 110 from my sw. For shots over I choke down on the next up club. so if I'm 120 out I'll just choke down my pw. for shots under 80 yards I use 3/4 swings and so on.

Re: Pitching wedge or Sand wedge?

I get 145 yards with my PW, 125 with my SW and 95 with my LW. I have no problem swinging a full swing with any of them. For me, I start choking down if, for example, I am at 130 - 135 yards. I don't want to be short with my SW and I don't want to be long with my PW, so I will choke down about an inch with my PW.

Re: Pitching wedge or Sand wedge?

When between clubs, the rule of thumb is that you're better to choke down the longer club, rather than trying to 'lean on' the shorter club.

Re: Pitching wedge or Sand wedge?

Good question! Basically your wedges are scoring clubs meaning accuracy is absolutely paramount over distance and control is everything. If you're comfortable hitting a full shot and the distance is right then I'd say go with it. If the distance seems like a bit of a stretch then don't force it as you'll almost certainly lose accuracy. Take an extra club, choke down a little and shorten the swing a tad. You'll have to practice these shots a lot to control distance effectively as your coordination of the swing is different.
