Beware Fake Cleveland Wedges

Just a quick word of warning. I recently purchased some cleveland CG11 wedges off e-bay and they turned out to be fake.

I consider myself to be a fairly cautious person and even I was caught out. I'd heard about the fact that there were lots of fake wedges being sold on e-bay so I did tread carefully. I chose to purchase from someone who had a good e-bay reputation and also made a decision to only 'bid' for used clubs as I thought they would be less likley to be fake. Even with all this caution I ended up with 3 wedges (52,56 and 60 dgeree) that were fake.

The clubs look very genuine and even when I took them down to my local club a couple of the pros couldn't tell whether they were fake or not - it was the senior pro who eventually confirmed they were fake.

I've since been in contact with the seller and have agreed a refund with him.

So please be very careful when purchasing from e-bay.

I hope you reported the seller to eBay. They deal with these problems properly.

How were they determined to be fake?

Re: Beware Fake Cleveland Wedges

Damn - I bought my first set of Callaways from ebay - it was from Golftown thought, so no worries. I am looking for a set of X-20s and I came across this little disturbing tid bit of info.

eBay Canada Guides - COUNTERFEIT CALLAWAY CLUB S - X20 IRONS from CHINA

Also, I have seen shows where the pros had a hard time discerning the difference between the fakes and authentic clubs - they ended up cutting the clubs open to show the difference.

Good luck - I hope you can turn this around!

I recently purchased a Taylormade Burner Driver from Ebay that turned out to be a fake. I managed to get a full refund after complaining.

How did you find out that it was a fake? I've also bought a Burner and hit it for the first time today at zero degrees centigrade, and except for a few shots everything went way right. The shaft is stiff and the loft is 10.5. I want to find out if there is any way to authenticitate the origin.

This site had some helpful information: http://www.golfbidder.co.uk/counterfeit.htm

The club also had a burner emblem etched into the toe end of the clubface and did not have a serial number stamped into the hozel, genuine ones have a serial number you can register.

Re: Beware Fake Cleveland Wedges

hi
i know with Pings that if you register then they have all the details of your clubs on record and if you have a club stolen then you only have to tell then your register number and they will make up a club for you to the same speck and with the same number as the registered clubs, it the same if you want a wedge you give them your register number and the match it up with your registered clubs. if you can register you clubs then i would do it, if there stolen you could have a set made to the same speck and hopefully feel like the originals.
cheers
bill

The burner is a very light club with a longer than standard shaft, this is to assist with additional head speed. Try having your ball a little further forward in your stance so the clubface rotates closed a little more at impact.

Re: Beware Fake Cleveland Wedges

I've been considering by a Taylot Made Superquad Driver off e-bay. I have seen them being picked up for between £50 to £100 brand new. The seller does not give a reference number and so I am concerned they are fake
