Golf Shaft Spine Finder

I built mine for about $20 USD (shipping included) - good for all steel shafts.

What exactly does it do?

It finds spines. The name implies its function perfectly. There's much debate about the usefulness of determining the spine, but I won't play a set of clubs that aren't spined (unless mine are broken, lost, or simply MIA).

So ... exactly what is a 'spined' club?

All clubs look round. In actuality, they're oval shaped. Since they're actually oval shaped, one side is stronger than another (the ends of the oval). A spined shaft has the strong ends aligned. One alignment combats toe droop (spine at 12 o'clock). Another adds distance (spine away from target) and yet another adds control (spine towards target).

A club will bend in the same way each time it's swung. Properly done, a spined club will come back to the same point as you set it up in. An unspined club may waver off line a little bit - either to the toe, or heel, or high, or low.

Spined clubs make for a repeatable club response, so that it plays the same way swing-to-swing, whether you're 'stepping on it' or 'easing off', the clubhead returns to the same position time and again.

And you know what direction all your irons are 'spining' ?

Do you mean spining or spinning?

My assumption was that since there was different directions of the club-spine, and the different directions had different impact on the shots coming off the club, it would be relevant to make sure that all clubs had the same direction of spine??!!

Oh - ok. Yes, it's important for all your groups of clubs to be spined the same way (ie distance for woods, control for irons and wedges, distance for putter )

Been looking into the spine finders and the extractors on Ebay so I can start tinkering...

I've given serious consideration to JB's shaft puller (after putting two nicks in a shaft with my current one).

Have heard nothing but good reviews on it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the spine is also the heaviest part of the shaft, correct? So, if you roll your shaft on a flat surface, it should come to rest at the same place each time. The bottom (where it is resting on the flat surface) is the heaviest part of the shaft, therefor the spine. Much cheaper than a spine finder.

I've heard that, too. Although, I have yet to put it up against my FA or NF4.
