Buying new clubs

Hi

I have sold the powakaddy that I used once - I am too young to justify it and actually like carrying my clubs! I am considering buying new clubs with the proceeds.

I have a set of Callaway X18's at present which I got for a bargin price off a mate and can almost get my money back on trade in. The reason for changing is that I want to get to single figures this year and find I get little feedback of these clubs and find it hard to work the ball.

So my questions are:

1. What clubs should I be looking at that will do me for mid handicap shoting and will be a good set of clubs for a single figure golfer. I like the new Srixon's , have yet to try mizunos and liked the LT2s. Any other suggestions?

2. Secondly, and this one is key. Do I stick with these clubs and use the £200 extra I will have to pay out for more lessons?

And to all those who responded to my last thread about giving up the game I have found new enthusiasum for the game!

try ping? i found them very helpfull over the years. go to a ping fitter and get them to set you up with the clubs that match your swing, most have 20 to 50 club setup on site and one will suit you, ie swing weight and shaft flex and grip size and lie, if you dont like there clubs then dont buy but you will learn more about what clubs suit you best. hope that helps best of luck.

You might consider taking your X-18s to fitter, and see if they can be adjusted to your swing. I don't know if that would be worth the time and money for you. You might take just one club (5i?) and have it fitted to your swing. Try it, and see if it plays better for you. That would give you a idea if the rest of your X-18s could be salvaged for your own use. X-18s are a pretty decent club, and since you purchased them from a friend, they most likely do not fit you swing, which is why they don't work well for you. GJS

Thanks - don't get me wrong - these clubs work and have been the most forgiving irons I have played.

What I am looking for is a set of clubs that do not fit into the "improver club" range and maybe try hitting some forged irons. I have tried the Srixon's and they felt great (admittedly the occasional bad shot felt awful though).

I have only tried the G2 irons and I haven't seen any Ping forged irons but then again I haven't really looked.

What I am looking for from this thread are any forged sets people have tried and feel are worth a look. It is a reasonable large and long term investment buying a new set so I want to consider as many sets as possible before buying.

Then again - maybe I should stick with the X18s that work well until I am consistently shoting very low scores.

If I was going to buy a big name brand, I would see if the company has a demo day scheduled close by. At least that way you can test the clubs and talk to their rep. The few Demo's I have went to have been really helpful not only testing the clubs but also working with you as far as what custom options are available in fitting the clubs to your specefications.

My guess is that your are looking for a certain feel from your clubs and that is going to be a more individual preference.

go to a fitter and get a custom fit set
i have just done this and my confidence is sky high
i now have no doubts that the club im holding is the perfect length loft and lie for me.
i dont care that they are not one of the top brands these irons are the best ive ever hit.
i was looking at getting mx900's or 2006 big berthas but these are better and cost 50% less
just my two pennies worth!
