Tiger Woods, Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly were among the players who got a sneak peek at Carnoustie on Sunday, and most liked the wider fairways and more forgiving rough. David Frost, however, thinks the set-up might be too easy.

Tiger Woods sets out on his quest for a third successive Open title at 9.09am on Thursday morning with Justin Rose and past champion Paul Lawrie.

Should be a great one to watch guy's...

Re: The Open Championship

Yep - any time a major sets up 'easier' it's much easier for a 'nobody' to win...

I'm kinda disappointed - I think that majors should be super difficult - and that wayward shots be punished HARD.

Re: The Open Championship

Last Carnoustie, Woods moaned that someone was going to get injured, Garcia went home in tears and Norman grumbled that it was like trying to drive into his hotel room.

I agree with you, LP, but the pros apparently don't...

The pros are used to roughs that have been pushed down by the spectators and having 20000 forecaddies.

Carnustie should play like the courses we amateurs play. Evil, deadly hay, narrow fairways and close out-of-bounds, and of course cruel weather.

Golf should be equal for all.

Re: The Open Championship

I went for a wander round there last weekend as I was up playing a course nearby. I played Gullane no1 at the weekend and the rough was longer there than it is at Carnoustie - I hope it blows a gale and pours so they can experience what us links golfers get 9months of the year (up until the Sunday when I playing nearby at Blairgowrie so I hope its nice then!)

Who will win?

For me:

Els looks to be good.

Also Harrington.

Maybe Vijay?

My money is on... you got it... Tiger

Harrington I also like...

Re: The Open Championship

My favourites are:

The obvious ones - Tiger, Vijay, Els
The strong outsiders - Paddy, Jerry Kelly, Zach Johnson, Lefty
The ones I will root for - Anders Hansen & Thomas Bjørn (of course), Garcia, Poulter and Monty (I DO think he deserves a major, and preferably the Open).

Re: The Open Championship

hi
one thing about carnoustie thats always hard is the greens, there full of humps and hollow's and there is not a flat green on the course, putting is going to be really hard and puting the ball on the right side off the hole is going to count so much too, if you have never seen the green at carnoustie and muirfield in real life then you wont understand just how hard they are to read as there are so amny diffrent borrows on the one green.i hope the wind does blow and check the times of the tides to see who has the bests tee times when it will be calm when the tide started to go out.

Re: The Open Championship

I am cheering for Els, who has always been my favorite golfer and my semi long shot is Wier.

Re: The Open Championship

Shouldn't you be picking Els as a long shot?

He hasn't shown much gusto since that knee injury...

Re: The Open Championship

hi
think mickelson should do well with his great short game and if he putts well then he should be in the last 6, tiger wont be far away and hope monty will be up there too, els and cassy and westwood also cold be there on the last day.
think it will be more about who does not give away shots as much as who makes birdies.

That's why I said cheering for Els, I really do not think he can hold up all 4 rounds. Of late he seems to put in 2 or 3 good rounds with one lousey one.
