  • Confused about advice re: grip?

I was reading some forum posts from 2009 where the question was about a guy pushing his drives to the right. One response was “check your grip, it may be too weak.” The next responder advised “keeping the arms and hands relaxed . . .” Are these answers contradictory, or do I not understand?

    Hi Lem,

A weak grip is often described as (for right hander) the left hand being positioned further to the left on the grip, i.e. only being able to see one knuckle (or less) on the left hand at address.

As a separate, I would agree in that you should not tense your arms and hands at address for any* shot, they should be in a relaxed ready state. *It is advisable to firm your grip in certain exceptional circumstances such as playing from deep rough as this helps prevent the club from turning over.

    Hope this helps...

Thanks for clearing that up. Actually my problem is, with arthritis in my fingers (a gift from my mother, Thank you, Mom) after nine or ten holes I start having trouble griping the club firmly enough to keep it from turning on impact - sending the ball off to the right. Don't know if there's anything that can be done for that.

        Parents are nice like that!

Avon do the chamois jumbo grip which uses an innovative Air-Cushioned Absorption System that helps to eleviate the pain caused by arthritis. I have a number of students that swear by them. The oversize grip can also help curb the amount of wrist action in the golf swing which often causes people with arthritis the most pain.

Go into your nearest golf shop and ask if they have any clubs with them on, and if possible to be able to try.

        Hope this helps you Lem.
