  • Boss eyed?

I have been missing nearly all my putts left of the hole. (Right handed) When I played today it was pointed out that the face of my putter was closed and I was actually aiming left. It looked fine to me though. My right eye is stronger than my left mind. But I do not use specs for distance. When I got home, I tried it on the carpet. And sure enough, with both eyes open I was aiming the putter left. But if I only used my right eye, I lined up better. I am not happy putting one eyed though. Has anyone got any idea how to counter this problem please?

Using the marker line on the ball point it in the direction you want to putt. Align the putter face, your feet knees and shoulders with the line and keep your eyes fixed on the direction line, take the putter back and through so that it is following the line, dont watch the putter face swing back and through, only look at the exact point on the ball you want to strike untill the ball has gone.

That's it then Brian. I have just marked up a few balls with lines. I aimed the lines at a hole and set up square. To me I was aiming right of the hole. But they all hit the hole. Not sure what to do about it. It will be weird going to the course and apparently be aiming right all the time. And of course working out how to handle the slopes.
      Thanks Brian.

i dont understand, why dont you just aim the clubhead more to the right until it is straight?

Because with my eyes it seems that I am aiming well right. To just do what you suggest, I would be guessing how much right all the time and so could be very erratic.

When allowing for a break just put the line in the direction of the break and hit in the lines direction. After some use I think your brain will get used to it and it will not feel different.

That is only because your eyes basiclaly train themselves to see that and your subconscious will make you feel comfortable in that position because you have done it so long. The adjustment period will only take a week probbaly with practice.

And with reagards guessing, all of golf is basically guessing. You cant really tell until after you hit the shot and then you get the feedback and make the adjustment for the next one. The more feedback you get the better your adjustements and the better the guesses with practice. Take for example, in order to hit a straight shot i have to have the clubface 5 degrees or so open at address (normally my ball curves left a little). but it isnt the same every day, somttimes i come to the range and it curves a little more, to which i have to make a quick adjustment aiming the clubface a little more right, or some days i am hitting it right (very rare) to which i feel a little more rotation to solve it. By going on the range before a round of golf i can see what im working with on the day.

The advice brian gave is good though, but its really that simple. Btw i am a playing professional and a teacher. Sometimes intelligent people look for more mechanical reasons for their faults when the answer is simpler than you think. Like i said, your eyes will retrain themselves when you get it right and repeat it.

Talking about how my ball curves left and how eyes train themselves, whenever i hit a 10 yard draw my eyes literally see the ball fly straight (or my mind interprets that information) especially if the ball curves left onto the target. Whenever i push the ball (straight right) my mind 'sees the ball curve right - but my playing partners tell me it had no curve. Its just as my mind is so used to seeing the ball curve left it now interprets it as a straight shot. It is a very common and interesting psychological phenomenon.

You could well be right. I am going to play with it tomorrow.
